The Nepalese Embassy in London organized a special function in the Irish capital of Dublin on July 12 to felicitate Irish Everest summiteers and also to promote Nepal Tourism Year 2011 campaign. Issuing a press statement, the Nepali mission in London said the newly elected mayor of Dublin Lord Mayor Andrew Montague; senior members of parliament, Ambassador of India to Ireland P S Raghavan along with high level Irish officials attended the program. On the occasion, Nepali ambassador to the UK and Ireland Dr Suresh Chalise felicitated Everest summiteers Michael Murphy, Clare O Leary, Pat Falvey and Basi Geoghegan and conferred on them the title of the Goodwill Ambassador for the NTY 2011 campaign.

NMA set to issue digital climbing permits
Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) is in its final stage to lunch online software to issue digital mountaineering permits. The system is starting from August 1. Once the service is introduced, all its associate members (trekking agencies) can apply for permits of 33 peaks online. According to NMA, trekking agencies must fill up an online form available at its website – www.nepalmountaineering.org – and submit it for further processing. They should also upload details and photographs of team members. Once the form is submitted, applicants will get registration number which should be produced at the Accounts Department of NMA to get the permit. NMA will give separate usernames and passwords to members. NMA has put the system on trial till July 20. It will formally launch the digital permit system on August 1.

Nepal to host international hoteliers meet
Nepal is hosting the world congress of the International Hotel and Restaurant Association (IHR&A) in the first week of December. The event was last organized in Nepal about four decades ago.

Dr Ghassan Aidi, president of the association, recently met Prime Minister JhalanathKhanal in Kathmandu and sought the support of the government to the event. Responding to Aidi, Khanal promised all possible support to the event and expressed hope that the event would help promote the ongoing Nepal Tourism Year 2011.

Khanal also told Aidi that Nepal looks forward to become a major tourist destination in the world.

The association had held one of its previous congresses in Nepal way back in 1968, said Aidi, adding that the upcoming event would make wider impact in Nepal’s tourism.

“With more than 300,000 hotels and 800,000 restaurants as its members, IHR&A is a big organization and look forward to bring them to Nepal in December,” according to Aidi.

Interaction on Mountain Tourism held

Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal (TAAN) in coordination with Khumbu Tourism Festival 2011, organizing committee organized a daylong interaction on ‘Adventure Mountain Tourism: Issues of Khumbu’ in Lukla on April 26. The interaction was organized on the sidelines of Khumbu Tourism Festival 2011.
Around 80 stakeholders, including local tourism entrepreneurs, trekking workers, airline representatives, non-government organizations, government representatives, among others participated in the interaction.
The participants held interactive discussions on porter issues, hotel menu, airlines’ policies, marketing of tourism products, responsible tourism practices among others.

Parties ‘no banda’ commitment – just a joke

Forgetting their commitment of not holding political activities that adversely affect the Nepal Tourism Year 2011 campaign, ethnic fronts of the major political parties enforced a general strike in Kathmandu Valley on 27 April.
Senior leaders of all political parties during the soft launch of the campaign in November last year had signed a paper promising not to hold any strike and help the government make the campaign a grand success.
The strike badly affected vehicular movement, educational institutions and business enterprises from the early morning. The banda enforcers, however, allowed tourist vehicles to ply. However, many tourists could be seen walking to their destinations because public vehicles had stayed off the roads because of the strike.
The parties, however, defended themselves, saying they have neither taken any decision to hold a general strike.
